“Four Pines” barn quilt honors the women of the 1919 Staples Civic Association who fought to save a beautiful stand of red and white pine trees from being harvested. Against the odds and the naysayers, they contracted to purchase the 40 acres of land for $23,000.
Today, Pine Grove Park features a large shelter with full kitchen, two smaller picnic shelters, a playground, disc golf course, horseshoe pits, picnic areas, and nature walking. Pine Grove Field is home to the Lumberbats, a local amateur baseball team.
The beautiful stone work in the park was done by the Civil Conservation Corps.
