A Simpler Life
Southwest Trail
46130 County 11
Bertha MN 56437
Everyone remembers how much simpler life was as a small child learning the basic shapes and colors. This is the basis for our color choices and the title.
Being a quilter and seeing area barn quilts around the state, I knew I wanted to paint one and display it for everyone to see it as they passed by our farm. Looking through my quilt block patterns, I found this design. My husband and I liked the simple shapes and decided to do it in basic colors. We are the second-generation family on this farm, so the initial in the middle represents the family roots.

Spinning Star
Southwest Trail
49094 195thAve. Verndale, MN 56481
Spinning Star was chosen because I liked the pattern and we decided to place it on a 100-year-old granary. I am a quilter but I also like making barn quilts. Painting the barn quilt helped me to visualize squares. Quilts always looked so difficult to sew but my cousin taught me to look at each square. I also made a barn quilt that you can see from the county road 67. Look across the field at the back of the Quonset hut and you will see “Star Pattern”. It was the first barn quilt that I painted.

102 Brown St. SW (Old Firehall), Verndale, MN 56481
The colors match Verndale’s “ A Great Place to Grow”. This building is the old fire hall and at one time housed a jail cell. It has public bathrooms available with entrance on Brown Street. It is right across from the city park – a great place to stop for a picnic or let kids play.
The barn quilt was a gift from Barn Quilts of Central Minnesota and was painted by art students at Staples Motley High School.
ClarMar Family 8
Northwest Trail
18594 Co. Rd 7 Verndale MN.
We raised 6 children here so we chose a star design with 8 points to represent out family of eight. The 16 triangles within the large start represent our grandchildren. The 5 ivory points inside the star represents spouses of our children. The blue star represents God – the center of our lives! We call our farm ClarMar for Clarence and Mary. Our 50th wedding celebration was held in this building. We have lived here 54 years and still making memories!
We like Norwegian Blue and Burgundy which go with our house and front door. The ivory color is a good color for the corn plaza!
